F.S.E. Proposal

For my final project, I intend on displaying how memories fade.
The idea is to have two wooden wheels attached to each other by a motor that will slowly turn on a platform. Around the circumference of the wheels, will be some of these photos, 3x3 inches each. I will be displaying 20 images, thus making the circumference of the wheel 5 feet. Once the photo reaches the bottom of the wheel, it will dip into a solution that overtime, will cause the image to fade.

  1. That is a perfect way to convey how memories fade over time , being such a big work one issue with this piece could be being able to finish on the day its due with the limit amount of time we have.

    1. I appreciate your concern about my time limit, however, I feel that the hardest part will be creating the platform, after that though, it shouldn't take overly long. Thanks Lauren. :)

  2. Are all you images going to fade or are you also going to preserve the more important memories as well?

    1. Nope, all of the images on the wheel will fade away. I'll be displaying how memories fade not how to preserve them.

  3. I really like how you are using your images. What kind of basin are you using for the chemical is there meaning in what you are using. Will you be able to see the the images in the chemical.

    1. I tested out a few different solutions, and I discovered that a mixing water to bleach will work perfectly. The colours will fade into the solution, but you won't be able to tell what the image was over time.

  4. I really like this idea, and I think it will be very interesting when it's finished. How are you displaying the wheel? Will it be laying horizontal or vertical? Are the images attached to the wheel, or hanging off the wheel so they can dip into the solution?

    1. It will be vertical, and the image will be attached to the circumference of the circle. The images themselves will be the circumference.

  5. How will you get your photos to be dipped into a solution?

    1. When the wheel rotates on the motor, it will dip into the solution at the bottom of the platform. Think of a ferris wheel. Instead of people getting on or off the wheel, that is where it will dip into the solution.

  6. How will you chose the images? Will they be the most significant? Will you display the more significant ones in a special way? How large will the wheels be? Will the wheels be completely covered in images?

    1. I chose the images based on what days I remembered the most. All of these images will be displayed the same, and have the same dimensions. The wheels are 19.1 inches in diameter thus it being 5 feet in circumference. Only the circumference of the wheels will have the images. There will be no images on the face of the wheel, only the circumference.

  7. How do you plan on displaying this in an aesthetically pleasing manor. will the wheel have any decorative elements or will it just be wood? Also, what type of container will hold the solution the images are being dipped in?

    1. The wheel will just be the wood, I feel no need in decorating it because I feel that it would ruin the piece. Wood in itself is abused and people tend to over look it. The bleach will be damaging the wood in time, and also display how memories don't last. I'm currently in search of a container that won't draw much attention away from the wood. A soft colour that works with the wood.

  8. I really enjoy the idea and concept behind your project. Are you planning on recording the presentation of the work as the work will only last for a small amount of time. I know you are planning on incorporating a motor, but have you considered making the viewer physically spin the wheel and interact with the artwork. I think that will allow the viewer to connect more with the piece. However, I think think the inability to prevent the photos from fading by using a motor is strong as well.

    1. I plan on only actually doing it at once. By which I mean, I'll test the motor, but I already know the solution works, so I'll put the solution in the contain when that day comes of observing other's pieces. In terms of the interaction with the wheel, I feel that it would be better on the motor because it'll be a steady speed. Plus, by touching the wheel, people will get bleach on their hands.

  9. Overall, I really enjoy the way you are choosing to approach this project. It's interesting that your piece will evolve on its own over time simply through the viewer's interaction with it. Have you considered making the wheel capable of spinning by forces weaker than those of the viewers' hands moving it, like by wind or even slight indoor air circulation? If this was possible to do, the piece could evolve without human interaction, showing that no matter how much you try to conserve a memory, they fade on their own after time.

    1. As wonderful as it would be to have the wheel move by the power of wind, it would be far more difficult than the motor because it is wood. Also, the wind would affect the solution as well and how it interacts with the images.

  10. I think the idea is neat. Do you think it will have an impact on other people or is it just a spinning wheel of photographs?
